*** CONSERVATIVES HOLD IW COUNCIL *** Welcome to the website of the Isle of Wight Conservative Association. The Association exists to sustain and promote the objectives and values of the Conservative Party in the parliamentary constituency of the Isle of Wight. We aim to provide an effective campaigning organisation in the constituency in order to secure the return of Conservative candidates at general and local elections and to raise the necessary funds to achieve this end. The constituency has approximately 106,000 voters making it the largest parliamentary constituency by population in the UK. The Island is represented in parliament by the Conservative MP Mr. Andrew Turner who was first elected in May 2001 and re-elected in 2005 with a majority of 12,978. The Island has 48 wards each with its own councillor. The 2005 local elections proved a resounding success for Conservatives on the Island. Conservative candidates won 35 of the 48 seats given the Island a Conservative controlled council for the first time in 24 years. At European level we are part of the South East region represented in the European parliament by Mr. Daniel Hannan. The Association has nearly 1000 members and there are 12 active branches throughout the Island. We hold a number of political and social functions during the year to which everyone, including non-members, is invited. Arreton and Newchurch -- Ashey, Havenstreet and Haylands |
